I’d like to tell you about a couple of exciting new developments in medicine. That is, that we’re using gene transfer to treat two important diseases that really disable people in their daily lives. One is erectile dysfunction, which affects more than half of men over the age of 50, and the other is overactive bladder – urgency, frequency, and even wetting oneself. That affects about 16% of both men and women throughout their lifetime.
The treatment that we’re using is to take a human gene, put it into a test tube, reconstitute it, and then give it back to the organ that’s bothering you, either the penis or the bladder. What you would do as a patient disabled by one of these diseases, is to go to the doctor twice a year, have the doctor give you the treatment.
It only takes a few minutes. And then you wouldn’t have to take a pill, you wouldn’t have to worry about having the side effects of the various pills, wouldn’t even have to think about it at all. You could resume your normal sex life or not have to worry about running to the bathroom, day or night.
