Technical note about the terms: The pulmonary arteries are called 'arteries' because they lead away from the heart, but are still considered to be on the 'venous' side of the circulation because the blood they carry has not yet been filled with oxygen in the lungs. This is why physicians consider PE a 'vein' problem, even though the pulmonary arteries are blocked.
