Peer review
When you read that a study or paper is peer-reviewed, it means that experts in the relevant field -- other than the authors -- have read and approved the study or paper. The purpose of peer review is to make sure that researchers meet accepted standards. While peer review does not guarantee that a given study is correct or error-free, anything printed by a non-peer-reviewed publication should be looked at skeptically.
